Sirius Black
The leader of the Marauders, and a legend in his own lifetime. 'Padfoot' was the key to the success of the Great Battle. His earlier attempts at strategy had proven him to be quite astonishingly intelligent, a trait which alienated him early in his days at Hogwarts, apart from his three friends, Pettigrew, Lupin and Potter.
Before taking command of the rebellion faction, Black travelled the world extensively, drawing knowledge from some of the greatest wizards of our time. He applied that knowledge to his plans and openly shared what information he could to give the Marauders whatever advantage they could take.
Black was captured during the first attack on Voldemort's hideaway, and placed in Azkaban for six months. He escaped his prison - by means as yet undisclosed by Black (Editors Note: Is it possible that this has something to do with the unconfirmed rumours about Black being an unregistered Animagus?) - and returned to regroup the Marauders into the fighting machine that earned them their justified reputation in the history books.
Stunned by the death of Potter, Black took no part in the celebrations following Voldemort's downfall, and instead disappeared, along with Pettigrew and Lupin. He has contacted Dumbledore from time to time, and it would seem that he has returned to travelling the world.
In his Hogwarts days, Sirius and his friends got into a lot of mischief--probably mostly thought up by his devious self. He's the rebel, but to his friends, he's fiercely loyal. It's a fact--he'd die for his best friend, James Potter, and probably for his godson, Harry Potter, too.
Although quite intelligent (just look at the way he pieces together Dark Side schemes in Book 4!), sensibility was something he gained only after his twelve-year imprisonment in Azkaban. He is a rather emotional guy (not as in "sob, sob, oh no, Mufasa died!"--more like a "Insult my friend again and I'll KILL you!" thing). After all, he went after Wormtail for revenge without telling anyone his intent, or what really happened the night the Potters were killed (as in, Wormtail was the double-crossing scumbag, not him), and was too overcome/miserable to even consider defending himself/straightening out the Wormtail mess when he was arrested.
Sirius is definately tough; he spent twelve years in hell-on-earth, Azkaban, and still has enough of his mind and his strength to escape when he hears that Wormtail is still alive. As for power--he and James were the best students in their year at Hogwarts. Yep, that's Sirius--a natural, ridiculously talented, but the recalcitrant slacker with the easy smile and charm to spare. You gotta love him!

Biography: Sirius Black was the best friend of James Potter. According to Madam Rosmerta they were as close as brothers. Sirius was also friends with Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. When they learned Remus was a werewolf; Sirius, James and Peter worked to become animagi so they could be with him during the full moon. They finally managed it in their fifth year and Sirius could turn into a huge black dog, which earned him the nickname "Padfoot" from his friends. Sirius disliked Severus Snape intensely and told him how to gain access to the tunnel under the Shrieking Shack while Remus was transformed. Snape would have been killed if James Potter had not risked his own life and dragged him back.
After graduation, Sirius remained close friends with James. He served as best man at the Potter's wedding and Harry's godfather. When James and Lily needed a Secret Keeper for the Fidelus Charm, Sirius initially agreed but then suggested Peter Pettigrew as no one would believe the Potter's used him. James and Lily agreed and the charm was performed with Peter as the Secret Keeper. Less than a week later, Sirius checked on Peter and found him gone. He went to the Potter's cottage, but it was too late. After Hagrid refused to allow Sirius to take baby Harry, Sirius offered him his motorcycle. Later that day Sirius found Peter, but Peter was able to fake his own death and frame Sirius.
Sirius was sent to Azkaban without a trial. He spent the next twelve years there until he saw a newspaper picture of Peter as a rat. Sirius escaped from Azkaban and went to Surrey in dog form to catch a glimpse of Harry. Then Sirius went to Hogwarts. At Hogwarts he met and eventually earned the trust of Hermione's cat Crookshanks and made several attempts to catch Peter. He also watched Harry's Quidditch games and bought the boy a Firebolt racing broom for Christmas. On the night of Buckbeak's appeal, Sirius captured Peter - and Ron Weasley. Together with Lupin, Sirius was able to convince Harry, Ron and Hermione that he was innocent, but Peter escaped and Remus transformed before anything could be done to publicly prove his innocence. Sirius escaped with Buckbeak thanks to Harry and Hermione. He wrote to Harry over the summer and returned to Hogwarts, again in dog form, to aid Harry in the Tri-Wizard tournament. After Voldemort's resurrection Dumbledore sent him to alert the "old gang".
